Prof Barry Evans

Professor Barry Evans is Professor of Satellite Communications at the University of Surrey’s Institute for Communications Systems (ICS) and 6GIC. Educated at the University of Leeds, he held posts at the University of Essex before moving to Surrey in 1983 as Alex Harley Reeves Chair. He founded the Centre for Satellite Engineering Research (1990) and played a key role in the creation of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. In 1996 he was a founding Director the Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR), which became the Institute for Communications Systems in 2013 which was awarded £35m from UK Government to set up the 5G Innovation Centre. He has served as Dean of Engineering, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise (2001–09), and chaired major UK/EU research initiatives including SatNEx. Barry chaired UKTIN’s Non-Terrestrial Networks group. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and recipient of the IET’s Ambrose Fleming Medal for his pioneering contributions to satellite communications.
