Remote and rural coverage

Remote and rural coverage

We weigh up the economic, business and technology arguments and options to bring voice and data affordably to rural and remote areas

Globally, around 4 % of the world’s population (about 350 million people) still live in areas without any mobile broadband coverage, and these uncovered areas are almost exclusively rural.

Emerging technologies and approaches including non-terrestrial networks like LEO satellites, high-altitude platforms, UAVs, and 5G network slicing, are making rural connectivity more viable. Combined with innovative business models, spectrum sharing, and supportive regulations, these solutions enable service providers to deliver reliable voice and broadband services to even the most remote areas.

By applying tailored, sustainable solutions, organisations can unlock both societal and commercial value while contributing to broader environmental and development goals.

What we do

Our teams lead strategic initiatives and research projects focused on the cost-effective expansion of rural networks. Governments and industry listen to our experts for insight on the opportunities and challenges of delivering voice, data, and broadband to remote areas. We understand rural connectivity, from technology options to the diverse communities that rely on it, including private citizens, small businesses, and large industries operating in remote regions.

Why we are different

We have hands-on experience, most recently as Independent Assessor for the UK’s Shared Rural Network Initiative, a programme to improve 4G-based services. We understand which frequencies and technologies are better suited to delivering mobile services across the widest possible areas at the lowest cost.
